The historic cliff-top town of Matera is one of the most unique places in Basilicata region of Southern Italy. The old part of the city (located on the slope of the ravine) is a network of cave like houses cut into the rock. It is one of the oldest continuously-inhabited human settlements in the world.
Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 2019 European Capital of Culture.
