Bright and colorful houses of Bo-Kaap, a historic neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa... Formerly known as the Malay Quarter, it housed slaves brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and some places in Africa by Dutch colonists in the second half of the 18th century. According to legend, the rental terms of these houses required the walls to be kept white. When slavery was abolished in 1834 and the Cape Malay slaves were able to buy their homes, many of them chose to paint them in bright colors as an expression of their freedom.
