Description
Tangerines, also called mandarin oranges, are more cold hardy than oranges. They require full sun, consistent irrigation and, like other citrus, well-draining soil.
Mandarin oranges are ready to harvest when the fruit turns from green to bright orange. Unlike other fruits, you cannot use the color alone to determine when it is ready to harvest; you have to take a taste of a fruit to determine if it has reached the appropriate level of sweetness. Tangerines do not continue to ripen after they have been picked, and they will not last for very long after harvest. It is best to leave them on the tree as long as you can. Freshly picked tangerines will last for about two weeks at room temperature or longer if stored in the refrigerator. Do not put them in plastic bags to store them, as they are prone to mold.
